Cofinet Sustainability Program
Our innovative Green Filter
At Cofinet, we are dedicated to environmental conservation and the preservation of our ecosystem throughout the entire cultivation and processing stages of the finest Colombian coffee. That is why, since the inception of Cofinet in 2015, we have been involved in projects and have developed protocols to help offset and minimize our environmental footprint.
Water conservation is one of our sustainable initiatives, we focus our efforts on processing 95% of our coffees as Naturals and Honeys, which significantly reduces the use of water.
Additionally, we work with reforestation allies, such as Treeoma. Alongside them, we have planted thousands of native trees, compensating for the carbon footprint generated in the community and supporting our native forests.
At the end of 2023 we finalized a new sustainable project at our processing facilities. This new built-inhouse system treats the wastewater produced by coffee processing, protecting our water springs and local ecosystem.
Let us proudly introduce our latest innovation in Green Filter Systems, one of the biggest in the region and the first one in the department of Quindío.

Green Filter – What is it About
The Green Filter is a natural water treatment developed by Cenicafé (National Coffee Research Center). It is used for treating, cleaning, and irrigating wastewater in a controlled manner produced by coffee processing.
Its main purpose is to utilize nature’s own filtration methods within well-designed greenhouses, removing pollutants from wastewater. This ensures that they are not added to the soil, subsoil, or local water sources.
We have a system of greenhouses with Vetiver grass irrigated with wastewater. The water contaminants start to degrade while water passes through different processes such as evapotranspiration, filtration, biodegradation, and adsorption.
How it works
Once water has been used and recycled in the different stages in the coffee processing, it passes through a filter system that will trap any impurities or solids such as sticks, stones, or even coffee cherries. After this, water passes through tubes to large tanks, called primary system. In this primary system, all the solid material that could remain is settled at the bottom.
This pre-treated wastewater is moved to irrigation tanks. These tanks are connected to an irrigation plant that is set up inside the greenhouses with Vetiver grass.
As water is irrigated onto the grass, both the grass and soil absorb it. Afterwards, 80% of this water is released as oxygen, the remaining 20% nourishes the grass, and a small percentage goes directly into a tank. This water will repeat the same cycle to be irrigated again until it is released as oxygen.
Remember the solid remains at the bottom of the tanks of the primary system? These are dried on a concrete bed for several days and repurposed as compost for our coffee trees and other vegetation.
This endeavor is projected to cleanse an impressive 4000 liters of water daily, converting it into essential oxygen and thereby making a tangible positive contribution to our environment.

This sustainable built system or “Green Filter system” reduces the wastewater being discharged by our coffee processing to zero, becoming it the first coffee-sustainable facility with these characteristics in all the department of Quindío and being the biggest project in the region today.
Let’s work together for a more sustainable coffee industry!
